William was one of 11 children. His father died of Typhoid Fever in 1829 when William was nine years old. He went to live with a neighbor/family friend, Thomas Ewing. Ewing became a US Senator for Ohio.
He went to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He visited Hoyt in Des Moines in 1878 and shook the hands of Union soldiers who visited him at the home.
Many books have been published for his writings and correspondence, including: The Sherman Letters, Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman, and Home Letters of G. T. Sherman.
He died at 71 years of age. Buried in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louise, MO
