“Venetian Castles” Painting by Thomas Moran signed lower right corner “Moran, 1905”
The painting was purchased by the DMWC in 1911 from the Moulton and Ricketts Chicago Art Loan Exhibit held at the Women’s Club in March, 1911. Per a 6/85 letter from Margaretta M. Lovell, Asst Professor of Art, University of Cali., Berkley, “it is quite unusual in its subject- a narrow canal scene rather than a view of the Bacino…I am quite certain that it is a composite rather than a topographically accurate specific place.”

In 1870, Moran joined an expedition to explore Yellowstone national park as an artist. He was accredited with being the first to substantially document the geological wonders of the area.
