Marcel Mangin was born in Cherbourg, a town on the French side of the English Channel in the region of Normandy. Mangin spent much of his career in that area and became associated with artists who depicted scenes along the Channel. From 1871 to 1876, he studied at the premier art academy in France, the École des Beaux Arts (School of Fine Arts) where he developed a solidly realistic style that closely examined the forms of nature, from landscape to the human body. He exhibited at the Paris Salon for much of his career and was especially known for his drawings, watercolors and pastels, such as the two in the collection at Hoyt Sherman Place.
