The painting was given to the Des Moines Women’s Club as part of the Major S.H.M. Byers collection of paintings (and antique furniture) which Byers acquired during the 1870’s-1890’s when he served as U.S. Consul General in Switzerland and later in Italy. Large engravings of this painting are found in Germany and Switzerland.
