William Trost Richards

William Trost Richards

1833-1905

Richards was an American landscape artist associated with the Hudson River School and the American Pre-Raphaelite movement.

Working as an ornamental metal designer and illustrator from 1850 to 1858, he simultaneously became educated in the arts, studying under Paul Weber and attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Contributing to many local exhibitions, he was well known for his talent and for differentiating himself from other Hudson River School painters by focusing on “meticulous factual renderings.”
