De Souza Pinto was a well-known Portuguese painter active in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Studying in Portugal’s Escola Superior de Belas-Artes and France’s École des Beaux-Arts, he became well known for his naturalist style and frequent exhibitions at French and Portuguese events. He also attended a few international exhibitions and was often seen at the Paris Salon – he was even a member of the judging panel in 1900. The last decade of the 19th century was the most successful for José, but he continued to produce and exhibit his artwork until 1929.

Retiring in the Brittany region of France, he passed away in 1939.
