While John D. Forgy appears to have spent most of his life outside of art, given his wide range of documented occupations, his move to Des Moines in the late 1870s coincided with his aspirations as a portrait painter. Prior to settling down in Des Moines, John moved frequently to Indiana and Ohio, working odd jobs in many different fields. Briefly serving in Company B, 46th Indiana Volunteer Infantry as a Private during the Civil War, he was only enlisted for five months before being discharged on account of disability. Upon reaching Des Moines, he became a prominent figure in the city, having connections with the Sherman family and displaying his artwork at local exhibitions, including the Iowa State Fair.
