A famous American landscape painter, Inness introduced his interpretations of the Barbizon school and Swedenborgianism to his contemporaries in the United States, influencing generations of American landscape painters.

Constantly traveling, his work was influenced by and exhibited in many different parts of the United States and Europe. He co-founded the Society of American Artists and collaborated often with art-focused organizations throughout the United States.

Inness died suddenly upon viewing a beautiful sunset, exclaiming, “My God! Oh, how beautiful!” before collapsing.
