Edwin Lord Weeks
One of the most famous American orientalist painters, Edwin Lord Weeks, spent much of his life abroad. Inspired directly by sketches and photographs produced during his adventures around the world, Edwin’s paintings received praise from contemporaries and critics in both France and America. Often traveling for years at a time, accounts of his sometimes-perilous journeys were reproduced widely in the eastern United States, adding a narrative layer to his work. In his later years, he lived in Paris, painting until he died in 1903.
Stories of his extensive travels were published in New England newspapers and magazines.
