A portrait artist who spent much of his life in New York, Clarence was offered a position as Director of the Des Moines Academy of Art in 1891. From 1892 to 1895, Clarence lived in the Des Moines area, serving as an instructor, freelance painter, and influential leader within art circles. In 1895, the Des Moines Women’s Club sponsored an exhibition of his artwork, and three of his paintings were purchased that same year. By the end of 1895, he had resigned from his positions and moved back to New York to continue his studies.
Partial completion of Classics at Colgate College (1880-1881), Enrolled in Art Students League of New York and took classes under C. Y. Turner, William M. Chase, Thomas W. Dewing, and J. Alden Wier (1882-1887). Pupil of Munich Academy under Carl Marr.
