A prominent Iowan portrait artist, Cumming was the wife of famous painter and art instructor Charles Atherton Cumming. They met when Alice was a student at the Cumming School of Art – Charles was the director.

Although Charles died in 1932, Alice carried on her husband’s legacy by operating the Cumming School of Art until her retirement in 1954.

Alice was very active within Iowa art organizations, including co-founding the Iowa Art Guild and participating in the art exhibitions at the Iowa State Fair.
